EXPLAINED

Payment QR codes – explained.

What’s inside a SEPA QR code, how payment links work and what happens to your data.

What is a SEPA or EPC QR code?

A SEPA QR code – officially the EPC QR code, known in Germany as GiroCode – holds the details of a SEPA credit transfer in a standardised format: recipient, IBAN, BIC where needed, amount and reference. blitzQR generates it according to the European Payments Council guideline EPC069-12. Banking apps with a photo or QR transfer feature take over the details when scanning, so nobody has to type an IBAN.

How to create a payment QR code

Save the account holder and IBAN once. After that, you only enter the amount and reference and tap “Create QR code”. Leave the amount empty and the payer enters it themselves. You can store several recipient accounts and split a bill between several people first.

Getting the details into the banking app

The payer scans the banking QR with their app’s photo or QR transfer. On the payment page, they can also save the QR code as an image and import it, copy each field individually or hand the details to a supporting app via a payto: link. Which options work depends on the banking app.

What happens to your account details?

QR codes, payment links and QR images are created right in your browser. blitzQR stores recipient accounts and your recent payment requests only on your device – installed as an app, it also works offline. Only if you turn on the optional device sync via email sign-in are accounts and your PayPal.me name synced with your other devices; the history stays local. Details are in the privacy policy (German).

Approval happens in the banking app

blitzQR is neither a banking app nor a payment service. Neither the QR code nor the payment link triggers a payment: the payer checks recipient, IBAN and amount in their banking app and approves the transfer there. blitzQR never learns whether a payment was made – you mark that yourself in the history.

FAQ

Good to know.

Everything important about security, banks and privacy at a glance. More background and privacy details in the Explained section.

Can blitzQR withdraw money?

No. blitzQR only creates the transfer details. The payment is reviewed and approved exclusively in the payer’s banking app.

Banking QR or payment link?

Use the banking QR when the person is right in front of you and scans directly with their banking app. Use the payment link to share via messenger or email – or when they scan with their regular phone camera.

Which banking apps can read the QR code?

Many German banks read the SEPA QR (also called “GiroCode”) via their photo or QR transfer feature, e.g. Sparkasse, Volksbanken, ING, Commerzbank or comdirect. If that doesn’t work, the details can easily be copied on the payment page.

Where is my account data stored?

By default only in the browser on this device. Only if you enable the optional device sync via email sign-in under “Accounts & settings” (gear icon at the top) is it synced with your other devices.

Can I install blitzQR like an app?

Yes. Via “Add to Home Screen” (iPhone) or “Install app” (Android, desktop), blitzQR becomes an app on your device and then also works offline.

Do I need to sign up?

No. You create QR codes and payment links without signing up or creating an account. An email address is only needed if you want to use the optional device sync.
